Just built this circuit with partial success. Without knowing what it would sound like I have my doubts as to the sound my circuit is producing. The circuit is reasonably easy to construct if not a little cramped (on my mini breadboard). I have a couple of clear notes followed by a very much reduced succession of scratchy low volume notes. All the components are placed correctly with no shorts. Any ideas? I have posted a photo of my breadboard.
Just found out what the problem is. The schematic is wrong. The negative wire from the loudspeaker does not go to earth as shown on the schematic, it has to return to the rail that the resistors are joined to that links to pin 5 of the second 555 ic. This configuration gives the 10 notes mentioned in the description of the circuit. The volume is not very loud. Perhaps admin could comment on the schematic and the lack of volume.
I also made a Microsoft word document that contains both the circuit diagram and the breadboard layout in a neat, one page, file that is ready to print. This file is availbe online and you can download that here.

Isn't this wrong? The orange wire coming out of pin 5 from the right 555 timer connects into slot 31, which is connected to nothing. And that layout of the resistors, where are they connecting to? Also, with that layout, the resistors go into one after the other, doesn't that mean pin 1 of the 4017 has to go into EVERY resistor along the way instead of just its one dedicated resistor?
High school student lol, so sorry if im misunderstanding things but please reply.
Ok, so just got the whole thing working (thanks to Konrad's post) and I found that it can only make one sound at a time. The only way to change to the next sound is to power off and power on again with the battery cables or hook it up to a switch. Is it meant to do this?
