Got it to work as shown with the two 555's and also with the 556... Inserted a 1k pot between the second capacitor and the speaker for volume control... Worked great...

Is it possible to substitute a 556 chip for the two 555's?

Correct... You should be able to use the 1/8th chuck... Make sure it comes with a set screw (or two)... When you get it - test fit it... Mark the shaft where the set screw(s) fit and very carefully score the area - this will help the set screw seat properly... BTW that setup above looks great...

If you are going to make a mini drill press out of this I would suggest using the 18 volt power supply and rigging yourself a potentiometer to make it variable speed... yes the part you are talking about is a "chuck" and you might be able to find one at Micro-Mark (www.micromark.com) or Harbor...

Yes Justin, they do run through the pattern a bit fast... I can slow them down with the variable resistor I have in the circuit now... As is this circuit is built to have the green and red stay on for about the same length of time while the yellow is on for about a quarter of that time... Using...

Are you sure that the circuit can be used for LED's? Reason I ask is that it is possible that there is some residual current built up (left) in the inducers (L1 & L2)... This residual current may keep the LED's on for a while until their energy has completely dissipated...

I did some playing around today with my new soldering iron (it has been many - many years since I did any soldering)... This is what I ended up with working on the Traffic Lights circuit...
